“Criatura” ran from June 29th – July 5th at the Art Society of Trinidad & Tobago.
The exhibit, entitled Criatura, showcased 44 previously unreleased pieces. Criatura, the Spanish word for “creature”, expresses the desire to highlight the duality of this multivalent figure as “both woman and untame creature”.
The work embraces aspects of the feral, melding into the domestic, with a depth and intensity that unsettles as much as it stimulates. The pieces, conceived as lush, interior conversations that the artist conducts in private, simultaneously become bridges of discussion when regarded in the public eye. They prompt reflections on the alchemy that governs a mixing of selves, straddling life and death, their natures fed by forces of both fruition and decay.
